Gearing up for his South Pole expedition, Roald Amundsen couldn’t find outdoor gear that would withstand the extreme and variable conditions, so he constructed his own. Learning from the locals, he outfitted his team with cold weather gear made from reindeer hides and had seal skin gear constructed in Greenland. Fridtjof Nansen also had to be inventive on his expedition to the North Pole, constructing outerwear out of a discarded sleeping bag.
