The story of bison in Yellowstone National Park offers insight into the prehistory and early settlement of the American West, our evolving attitudes to wildlife management in national parks, and the current relationship between national park wildlife and neighboring towns. It’s a compelling story about how we view wildlife, what is, in fact, ‘wild,’ and how much the West has changed since Yellowstone became America’s first national park in 1872. Expedition Leader Sophie Mazowita uses bison as an entry point to discuss broad themes of wildlife management and conservation throughout the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, and introduces other wild characters that bring that ecosystem to life.
