How far will a South African conservationist go to help protect endangered rhinos? In 2017, over the course of 63 days and 2,008 miles, Expedition Leader Matt Meyer rode his bicycle through Washington, Oregon and California with a rhino statue in tow to raise awareness of the plight of these imperiled animals in Southern Africa. Along the way, he raised over $150,000 to support Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya, Save the Rhino Trust in Namibia, and Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary in South Africa. The large rhino he was towing drew attention everywhere he went, and he had many opportunities to educate people about rhino conservation at schools, in communities and through live interviews on TV, radio and podcasts. In addition to sharing the story of his ride, Matt offers insight into the biology, behaviors and family dynamics of black and white rhinos in Africa.
