One polar explorer was the first to reach the South Pole, fly over the North Pole, and conquer the Northwest Passage. Another was the first to cross Greenland. And the common thread among these two intrepid polar explorers? They were Norwegians.

What is it in the national character that makes Norwegians explorers? In particular, what drew them to the mythical poles? In this webinar, Dr. Terje I. Leiren will explore Norway’s distinct connection to nature and how that character is depicted in literature and other art forms. He’ll tell the stories of Roald Amundsen (1872–1928), famed explorer of the Arctic and Antarctic, and of Fridtjof Nansen (1861–1930), who led the first expedition across Greenland. In addition, Dr. Terje I. Leiren will discuss the effect that the emerging field of weather forecasting had on polar exploration.

In this webinar, you will learn about:

– Norwegian culture and its relationship to nature and exploration.
– Roald Amundsen and his exploration of the South Pole, North Pole, and the Northwest Passage.
– Fridtjof Nansen and his exploration of Greenland.
– The emergence of weather forecasting and the Bergen School of Meteorology.
